Here is the poem set to the music of "Mambrú se fue a la guerra" by María Elena Walsh of Argentina. We make elaborate gestures as we sing and use props for the ships and the Spanish flag. Individual children take the parts of the characters -- Columbus, the sailors, and the king and queen of Spain. The children love singing it, especially "chiribín, chiribín, chin, chin" and "Ajajá, ajajá." It's very catchy! My second graders learn the first two verses; my third graders add two more; my fourth graders learn the whole song.
