First, visit your nearest yarn store (Look in the "yellow pages" or see listings below.) to meet the owner; s/he will become your "best" friend and possibly your primary instructor.  You will need an experienced knitter to touch base with on a regular basis.

If there are no beginner lessons/classes available there, find another teacher to assist you -- adult ed classes, community college continuing education programs, knitting guilds (see below), and craft/fabric stores.
