experienced parent presents "fingerknitting" as a first step, then on to needles
easier to learn because it uses something familiar -- their hands instead of needles
          builds up hand/eye coordination
last URL offers yarn especially good for "finger knitting,"

LEARN TO KNIT WITH A "KNITTING FORK"
wooden knitting fork (German: Strickgabel ) and plant dyed, organic yarn in rainbow colors
one of the easiest and most satisfying ways to teach children to "knit"
very traditional craft: knitting forks (or lucets) used among the Vikings and in many other cultures as well
knitting kit contains everything to start your child off, including instructions, the knitting fork, and wool
because the wool is 100% organic, you can be happy that the craft you make is all natural
result will be a beautiful rainbow-colored braid, perfect for friendship bracelets, necklaces, and many other uses

CHILDREN'S BOOKS ABOUT KNITTING, YARN, AND SHEEP:

MY OPINION: CHILDREN (AND ADULTS) LEARN BEST WITH CIRCULAR NEEDLES!
SKACEL ADDI NATURA BAMBOO CIRCULAR NEEDLES -- MY FAVORITE KIND!
I've tried many kinds and Addi Natura is my number one favorite
cord doesn't kink (no need for brief boiling water treatment in the frying pan)
join is smooth and doesn't snag any yarns
highly recommended for knitters of all levels
nothing can fall off needle
project can be put down easily

"Children can be taught to knit from the age of five or six, and a good way to start is to sit them on your knee when small enough, let them hold the needles and put the needle into the stitch, but begin by putting the yarn round the needle for them."

In the Indonesian culture, children are told when they look at the moon that there is woman knitting who lives there..
When teaching knitting, use a poem -- "Under the fence, around the sheep, bring it through, and off it leaps." It also helps as a gentle reminder when finding someone's mistake. Say, "You forgot to leap."
